No more complaining about high gas prices

with one comment

Yes, you are reading this picture correctly; it’s currently 13.89 soles/liter for mod-grade gasoline. Being that there are 3.78 liters in a gallon and the current exchange rate is 2.60 soles for every $1, that would me that peruanos are paying $20.19/gal to fuel up their cars. Pretty crazy considering the low salaries. No wonder most people opt to stay away from cars and always take combi’s and buses.

Why are prices so high down here? Probably a combination of taxes on the fuel here and heavy subsidies in the states (quick search online pointed to some estimates of $10-$52 billion/year to the oil, gas and coal industries). Something to think about…

– E.g.

UPdate, Update..  Found out a couple months ago that prices are actually per gallon (even though liter is used for everything else).. Sheesh, that’s good to hear..  makes prices about $5 to $6 per gallon..  still not great, considering the lower standard of living here..
