leave a comment »

This was the last week that water, sanitation and hygiene group 20 (WASH 20) was getting together until the end of this year, and sadly, maybe the last time we will be working together on the same project at the same location.  But was nice seeing everyone up in the northern coastal city and capital of Lambayeque, Chiclayo for or progect design management (PDM) course, and a few days of in-service training (IST) in the Amazonas cities of (Lamud & Luya).

Andrea and I had a tag-team set of speeches prepped for a program last weekend.  As she explained in her blog, the night was moving along nicely, but suddenly the power in town went down (as it does from time to time.  Being that it was about 10:45pm, the crowd didn’t want to wait the delay out and left the program..early..  Unfortunately they missed out on my heart-felt comments regarding this special day of the mother..  big thanks to profi who helped get this together, feel free to use google translate if you’d like to know what it means in english:

Señores Autoridades, Queridas Madres Molinopampinoas, Publico Presente…

Muchas Gracias.

Suck/siphon out the liquid whey (as seen here), add plenty of salt (about 40 kg) and a couple cups of sodium nitrate for preservative, mix well

And collect the remaining curds (solids) in strainers. Then let the curds sit 10 minutes and form into more solid form.

Flip together 2 strainers to produce nice looking queso fresco wheels that will be ready to bag and ship out to Lima the following day.

About a 3 hour process, but worth it.

Moving Rocks Once Again, Community Collaboration..

with 3 comments

This time it’s called a community ‘collaboration’ work effort.  Something kinda nice about the rural communities out here in Peru.  When public projects need to get done, families are rallied and a good number of neighbors come out to put in some hours of hard labor.  In this case, a stone wall needed to be removed and only hand tools were used and could be used to shovel and pick away at earth and rocks the size of household furniture.  Only problem is that these super heavy rocks had to be moved and of course I was there to help haul.  Back’s getting a workout over here but it’s worth it.

This is just the start of the pile I was building close to the new chapel going up.
