Jobo got a bird in flight..

with 2 comments

The day after Christmas, Jobo and I were back walking in the backcountry to clean the water intake once again.  While out there jobo snapped a rock from his ‘heavy’ or rubber strap to take down this unknown bird.  Good aim at a distance..  fortunately the bird lived through the whole ordeal and was quite shaken up..  We left it to fly over to a branch and rest.

Christmas in Molinopampa..

Decorating trees aren’t quite as big as Nativity scenes in the houses and institutions.  Folks will grab greenery from around the area and customize their nacimientos (or Nativity scenes) to their liking each year.  Typically these go up about a week before the big day and are taken down during the Epiphany, on January 5th.

Our family has been raising a pig to finally prepare for this day and the killing and processing has gone relatively smoothly.  Long spike knife is thrust into the chest through the ‘armpit’ and most hairs are singed before cleaning out the guts.  That’s it.  Dry the animal for a couple hours then start cooking up chunks to enjoy.  Plenty of Paneton and Chocolatadas as well are around to enjoy.

Back at site..

After a few weeks visiting the jungle, taking care of some logistics in Lima, and seeing the canyons and spicy food of areas down south; we’re finally back safe in site to enjoy the holiday season and continue work here in Molinopampa..  Only one year left, actually, only 10 more solid months to barrel through the projects and progress we are involved in here in Amazonas.  Time flies fast when your having fun, or keeping busy, or attempting to communicate in a new language or whatever and looking forward to the experiences, struggles and good times that are yet to come.  In the meantime, here’s a picture of Andrea eating a worm in Iquitos..

These grubs are mainly found in the Aguaje trees of the jungle and when fried up taste kinda crunchy and quite buttery. Personally kinda like the treats.

See how many padlocks you can spot in this picture..

So this is supposedly a thing around the world.. based on from what hear some Italian movie in the 90s where a pair has to toss the key into the river to symbolize unbreakable love. I see it as public littering and those caught should be locked to the very bridge they violated.. just kidding, but it is interesting to see how this romantic vandalism springs up in certain parts of the world, like here in the Puente Bolognesi in Arequipa Peru.
