Just when you thought you’ve seen enough dead animals..

Yet another post about putting down a poor guinea pig but this one is hopefully quite a bit more then just chagrining..  Here I visit w Consuela, the pro at preparing and cooking cuy (guinea pig) to see the steps of creating a guinea pig and peanut lunch.  View the video series below and look at the descriptions I put on the YouTube page of each video..  Should be up and running in no time creating your very own cuy dishes at home.

Cook up guinea pig like a pro..

If Vilcabamba is supposed to be in the valley of longevity, why are the producing a special type of tabacco to smoke..

leave a comment »

It’s called Chamico and it’s supposedly mostly grown around Vilcabamba.. tastes pretty bland and I wonder if it’s more of a gimmick for tourists passing through..  Then again, it might be partially this Jimson weed plant which is apparently pretty hallucinogenic and toxic (mostly when eaten or drank as tea).  The shop owners say it’s not the case, rather the internet says it might be more of this Long Spined Thorn Apple (y en Espanol), which appears more fatal then just toxic.  Anyway you look at it, it’s best to avoid.

Observations and Reflections of Ecuador..

with 4 comments

Don’t have many reflections to share, but at least check out these interesting sights we’ve encountered in the country at 0 degrees latitude.

Little Kid, Big Axe..

with one comment

And that’s exactly what this is.  Spent the afternoon w young Darwin yesterday putting together a cookstove for his family as he prepared most of the firewood.

Isn’t a bit ironic that the little kid who’s swinging around the axe hap-haphazardly is named ‘Darwin’?

Don’t mean to be too brutal, but here’s how to kill a cow..

with one comment

Had no idea that putting down and processing a cow could be soo quick and simple.. All that is needed is a few people, and:

1. 1 cow
2. 2 or 3 sharp knifes
3. 2 or 3 ropes, to tied down legs and eventually hang the meat
4. 1 axe (or hacksaw to open the chest)
5. 1 segment of plastic, to keep the organs clean when you pull them out
6. 2 large bowls or plastic buckets, to catch blood

And that’s it.. takes about an hour or two but efficient use of time and animal. All the meat is hung to be served in the next couple days, the feet are saved for soup, the head and tongue also will be soup or fed to pigs, hide is taken to make leather, and intestines are washed out real well to eventually be grilled or fried or use for sausage.

All parts can be found watching through this playlist  (in the comment section in You Tube, I describe the instructional steps in more detail)..

Found this in the room while I was spending the night in Piura. I didn’t realize how nice the blend between lions and waterfalls was.. don’t know why one of the lions is standing on green water though..

Saying goodbye in and to Quito..

These past couple days with my dad and Wayne Ashmore have gone by super quick and I hate to see the two of them depart. Enjoyed the quick visit very much and I think they did too.
