Sights of the Lima Streets..

leave a comment »

Much like the ‘reflections on Ecuador‘, because this is close to being our final time visiting the big city during our term of service.  And perhaps I’ll be more shocked and observant when I’m back in the states, because even walking around the neighborhoods of Peru’s capital city: Lima, has proven to be a bit interesting and photographic worthy..  For instance (at the Sodimac on Angamos Este):

How many toilet would you guess there are in a bathroom with all these sinks? ANSWER is bellow..

There’s even a free neighborhood/municipal bike use program in San Borja:

Siempre, plenty of Female Traffic Cops:

Sometime in their Inka Kola booth, sometimes just braving it on the streets.

And of course the Olive Restaurant.

Really was just a quick stop by the capitol city to have our medical checks and quick get together to celebrate the rapidly ending term of service, nice break from the busyness wrapping things up in Molino.

BTW, The Correct answer is 7 toilets, there were 4 sand up urinating stalls and 3 sit down crappers.  I unfortunately could not get any more pictures of the bathroom because the other guests were giving me weird looks for already taking pictures.

My stomach is about to explode from tasty Peruvian food..

Is going to be my significant memory from this year’s Mistura Food Festival at Costa Verde in Lima.   Quite a grad event that people are traveling to (from the states, europe, asia) and it was well worth the S/. 25 entry price.  Andrea does a great job recapping some of the food memories in her post (HERE).  But here’s a couple of my viewpoints:

Longhorns, of Cajamarca..

leave a comment »

And, of much of the Andes it turns out.  This horn is called an Erke and as wikipedia puts it, they are large lip concussion horns used for ritual purposes (Click here for english).  In the spanish version of the entry (Click Here, Cliquea Aqui) they go into more detail that the horn in Cajamarca is called a  Clarín and it’s 3-4 meters long and made up by sugar cane bamboo stalks.  Depending on the area around the region of Cajamarca, it can have more of a sharp or gloomy sound.  We found these Clarínes during the procession for ‘Virgin of the Natividad’ in Los Banos del Inca.

Check out the video and hear for yourself:

And what trip to Cajamarca wouldn’t be complete without seeing plenty of Cajamarcan women with their traditional hats.

It feels like there’s a snake trying to come out of my butt..

with 9 comments

Is exactly what I was saying a couple days ago while sitting in a cramped minivan on a drive to Mendoza for materials.  It was soo itchy and squirmy, and I wished they made some kind of anal scrub brush over here in Peru because it really did FEEL LIKE A SMALL ANIMAL was trapped inside my back-end.

Let me back up, here’s what I took a few days earlier:

Albendazol, just one dose of 200mg is all it takes.

Albendazol, just one dose of 400mg is all it takes.

As prescribed by the medicos because fecal samples taken in Lima came back positive for Ascaris lumbricoides, or some type of tapeworm.  I was and am okay having small living creatures inside of me, but what came out of my pant-leg when I finally got to Mendoza was really not very small.  When I was walking around trying to find a bathroom, this fell out of me and onto the street.

Kinda looks like a average earthworm but instead was getting its nourishment from my stomach and intestinal material.  What a bum..  the worm that is..

Circus comes to Molinopampa..

leave a comment »

And only for about a week they set up the tarp and loudspeaker at the losa (concrete court) near our house.  This traveling circus is definitely low-key, without any animals and only a 1/2 dozen performers they seemed to get by.  Much like the small scale circus we saw a couple years ago in Lima, this one had magic, plenty of clowns, a lady being able to hang from her neck, a guy balancing stuff on his head, same guy with a cross-dressing routine, and plenty of waiting around.  Started and ended late, but worth it in the evening..

National Government Cocina Mejoradas..

with one comment

As I mentioned in an earlier post, the Department of Energy and Mines through the national government came to town last month and put up over 100 cocina mejoradas in our district.  They did a version of the INKAWASI PICHQA designed by the German NGO GIZ.  Happy to see that more and more families are getting onboard with piping cook-smoke out of their kitchens and I hope this style works for our community as well.
